About Piney Hills Wildlife Management Area

Piney Hills Wildlife Management Area (WMA) is located in Monroe County in southeastern West Virginia, covering a varied terrain of approximately 13,000 acres. The area is characterized by steep hills, ridges, and rich hardwood forests dominated by oak, hickory, and pine species. The diverse habitat supports a wide range of wildlife, including white-tailed deer, wild turkey, black bear, and numerous songbirds, making it a popular destination for hunters and bird watchers. Historically, the land was once subject to logging and small-scale farming but has since reverted largely to forested conditions. Outdoor enthusiasts can explore several miles of multipurpose trails suited for hiking and mountain biking, while seasonal hunting draws many visitors annually. The area is also known for its scenic overlooks that provide expansive views of the surrounding Appalachian foothills. Piney Hills WMA is managed primarily for wildlife habitat conservation and outdoor recreational use, striking a balance between preserving natural resources and offering accessible wilderness experiences. Visitors appreciate the relatively remote and quiet atmosphere, ideal for nature photography and backcountry pursuits. The area also features small streams and wetland pockets that support amphibians and aquatic life, adding to the ecological diversity.
